Summary:

From the banks of the Mississippi to the streets of St. Louis, finally coming to rest in Colchester. The Lemay Leveller is a the story of one woman’s adventure from a troubled childhood, nihilistic youth and finally, triumphant middle age, weaving a thousand diary entries into a narrative that explores life, war, abuse, suicide, homelessness, religion, childhood, duty, patriotism, police violence, sexuality and yet more.

This is a book full of richly sketched characters, not the least of which is Lemay itself. A beautifully rundown area of a divided city “made for the John Waters films that circulated like guide books.” The Lemay Leveller examines society one person at a time, calling on us all to recognise our part in the greater story.

While harrowing at times, The Lemay Leveller never loses its sense of humour, bringing the reader along on a journey full of music, passion, and wry amusement over the absurdities of life.

Review:

The Lemay Leveller, by Erin Summers Norman, is an absolute roller coaster ride of emotions. From the very beginning, there are feels beyond belief. The struggles this woman endured, along with the amazing amount of hardships, is mind-blowing and few individuals would have been able to come through as levelheaded as she has. The book contains a compilation of diary entries that describe all of her experiences with finesse and class. Although the experiences weren’t the happiest of memories, this novel is written in a way that doesn’t beg for your sympathy. She doesn’t want it. Erin Summers Norman wants you to read the book and learn the lesson that no matter what life throws at you, anyone can come out whole with the right mindset and support.

This book is super relatable as well, so it’s difficult not to truly love this book. Recommended for all, not just those who have been through bad experiences. The lesson within is one that can be learned by anyone and everyone. Read it now!
