ULM: What inspired the Under the Table plot?
The urge to grow as a writer mostly. My last three novels featured guys that had more alpha male characteristics. I wanted to flip that script and create some badass women instead. Ladies who were capable and not necessarily in need of any rescuing, even as they were figuring out how to meet the challenges of their own lives.
ULM: How hard was it to create a character like Tristan?
At first it was challenging, trying to keep him innocent and sensitive. Once he started really learning about life outside of his upbringing, I fell in love with him and it became so much dang fun. He was like an unwrapped piece of delicious man-candy.
ULM: Your latest novel was funny. Is implementing humor into a romance difficult?
Thanks so much for saying that. The humor is probably my favorite part of writing. I’m a long time believer in laughter being the best medicine. When something I find particularly hysterical gets cut out in the edit, my heavy sigh is audible. But the simple truth is sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t and I have to be able to let it go.
ULM: What three words would you use to describe Tristan?
Intelligent, Sensitive and Endearing
ULM: Which of your characters is your favorite?
Tristan, with Zoey’s sister Ruth a very close second. I don’t want to give anything with the plot away, but Ruth embodies all the risk taking and boldness that made her a pleasure to write.
ULM: What themes can readers find in your book?
Friendship, Family, Love and a lot of 21st century pop culture.
ULM: Zoey is a realistic, down to earth, and caring person. She’s also fun to follow. How long does it take to develop characters like her?
My female characters are pretty easy to start. They usually have attributes I wish I had. Then they evolve as the plot progresses. It’s sort of amazing watching them develop with the book itself.
ULM: What other projects are you working on that you can share with us, readers?
I’m fluctuating between two stories right now. One is about two brothers at the crossroads of a family business and the woman who unexpectedly enters their lives. The other is about an awkward Rockstar and a mysterious woman who enchants him. But for the moment, I’m gearing up to launch Under the Table and make a few appearances. I love this part of being an author. Meeting readers is the best!
ULM: Where can readers find you and your books?
All my books (Big Girl Panties, The Sweet Spot, The Total Package as well as Under the Table) can be found wherever books are sold (if they don’t stock it, don’t be afraid to ask…they’ll order it!)
