Q&A with Author Meg Hafdahl

Q: How did you get started in writing horror and suspense?
I’ve always been a reader of the genre, but it took me a while to find my footing in horror. I
thought I wanted to write literary fiction, and it wasn’t until I was about age thirty that I realized
OH I’m a horror writer! Everything I loved about “literature” and everything I loved about horror
could be combined!

Q: When did you publish your first story?
My first published short story was “Willoughby” in Spider Road Press’ anthology Eve’s Requiem:
Tales of Women, Mystery, and Horror in 2014. It’s a story of a young girl walking home at night
and feeling as though she’s forgotten something vital, something that could hurt her. It ended up
spawning my entire novel series as Willoughby, Minnesota is a strange town with lots of
possibilities…

Q: When did you begin writing your third book in the macabre series, Twisted Reveries III?
It was a pandemic “baby”! Inklings Publishing and I knew we wanted to have a third installment
in the series, and so it was a nice diversion from the real horror going on to work on this book.

Q: Tell us, readers, about your latest book, Twisted Reveries III.

It is thirteen stories, all female-driven, and all taking place in the past. Some are psychological
horror, some are supernatural. I love to scare, and I also am a history nerd. But I’m most
interested in women’s history. It’s a bloody, trippy, mind-bending trip that visits everywhere from
the rural South, to Victorian England, to Colonial America.

Q: What themes will readers find in your books?
Women’s issues: marriage, motherhood, self-worth. I’m also fascinated by horror that begins in
the mind, like not being able to trust yourself, amnesia, hearing voices etc. I’m not going to
lie, I like monsters, blood, all the fun stuff!

Q: What is your advice for aspiring writers in your genre?
Do the work!! Until you write A LOT you will find it hard to achieve success. Reading, attending
workshops, talking about writing, these are all good supplements. But you should devote lots of
time to the actual writing!

Q: What will your next writing project be?

My next book release is The Science of Witchcraft on September 4th, this is the fifth in my non-
fiction series with my bestie and co-author Kelly Florence. I’m also editing my fourth novel so
keep an eye out for that.
